Exact mean field dynamics for epidemic-like processes on heterogeneous networks

چکیده

We show that the mean field equations for the SIR epidemic can be exactly solved for a network with arbitrary degree distribution. Our exact solution consists of reducing the dynamics to a lone first order differential equation, which has a solution in terms of an integral over functions dependent on the degree distribution of the network, and reconstructing all mean field functions of interest from this integral. Irreversibility of the SIR epidemic is crucial for the solution. We also find exact solutions to the sexually transmitted disease SI epidemic on bipartite graphs, to a simplified rumor spreading model, and to a new model for recommendation spreading, via similar techniques. Numerical simulations of these processes on scale free networks demonstrate the qualitative validity of mean field theory in most regimes.

Nonperturbative heterogeneous mean-field approach to epidemic spreading in complex networks.

Since roughly a decade ago, network science has focused among others on the problem of how the spreading of diseases depends on structural patterns. Here, we contribute to further advance our understanding of epidemic spreading processes by proposing a nonperturbative formulation of the heterogeneous mean-field approach that has been commonly used in the physics literature to deal with this kin...

Unification of theoretical approaches for epidemic spreading on complex networks.

Models of epidemic spreading on complex networks have attracted great attention among researchers in physics, mathematics, and epidemiology due to their success in predicting and controlling scenarios of epidemic spreading in real-world scenarios. To understand the interplay between epidemic spreading and the topology of a contact network, several outstanding theoretical approaches have been de...

Unified mean-field approach to voter-like models on networks

We propose a generalized framework for the study of voter models in complex networks at the the heterogeneous mean-field (HMF) level that (i) yields a unified picture for existing copy/invasion processes and (ii) allows for the introduction of further heterogeneity through degree-selectivity rules. In the context of the HMF approximation, our model is capable of providing straightforward estima...

Annealed and mean-field formulations of disease dynamics on static and adaptive networks.

We use the annealed formulation of complex networks to study the dynamical behavior of disease spreading on both static and adaptive networked systems. This unifying approach relies on the annealed adjacency matrix, representing one network ensemble, and allows to solve the dynamical evolution of the whole network ensemble all at once. Our results accurately reproduce those obtained by extensiv...

Energy-Aware Probabilistic Epidemic Forwarding Method in Heterogeneous Delay Tolerant Networks

Due to the increasing use of wireless communications, infrastructure-less networks such as Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) should be highly considered. DTN is most suitable where there is an intermittent connection between communicating nodes such as wireless mobile ad hoc network nodes. In general, a message sending node in DTN copies the message and transmits it to nodes which it encounters. A...
